Stuff Kids’ Pastors Like #4: “Calling The Adult Service ‘Big Church’”

Church sign 4

Why do we call adult services “Big Church”? I don’t get it. As Children’s Ministry leaders we complain all the time about not being respected like the other pastors in the church. We’re either perceived as not being as cool as the youth guys, not as talented as the worship guys, or not as smart as the adult pastors. In a lot of ways we feel like the red-headed step children of the pastoral family (no offense to any of my ginger readers, I have nothing but respect for you. I do not discriminate against people’s hair color or how many freckles they have.)

Using phrases like “Big Church” only adds to the stereotype that we are junior pastors. When we use childish terms to describe what church is all about it makes us (and the rest of our team) sound like we don’t know what we’re doing. It makes people not want to take us seriously.

We’ve got an important role. It’s not “Church Lite” for kids and “Big Church” for adults. It’s church. Sure we do silly stuff sometimes to help kids get excited about God (Who doesn’t like to dress up like Moses or Habakkuk from time to time? If it were socially acceptable I would walk around with a bathrobe on all the time, but it’s frowned upon at work so I refrain). To a point, that just comes with the territory. The key is to remember why we do what we do and with whom we should do it with. We adapt for them so that they can get in on all the cool stuff that God wants to do in them, through our Children’s Ministry. Let’s extend the same courtesy to everyone else.
